The book when came into fresh light of this world, was initially criticized for the relation of a love story which evolved between a teenager boy and a girl who works in Gandhi jis ashram.But according to me it can be easily proclaimed as Narayans classic touch, to simple human emotions.In this case here it is love.
The story starts with a little dull atmosphere and slow tempo, as our hero is one of rich class origins. His only job being, roaming on streets . One day he falls in love with a women who asks him for donation. Our hero to get her, somehow follows her, only to know that she is very simple human being who lives with mahatma himself, sleeping on floor, wearing bare minimum clothes.

He finds himself going after her, at first trying to observe her. He choses to walk the path of struggle with her, leaving his comfortable life and fortune behind her.The story becomes so subtle here as the protagonist, falls in a flux of things,his mind wants to go away from the pain of waking up early mornings, avoiding fasts, avoiding long restless walks. While on the other hand when he sees her face he does this all without realizing the pain in it. He begins to realize that what he is doing is in a way not correct as he is using freedom struggle for his own petty ends.
To complicate more, Gandhi Ji tells her to take him as his student and teach him! the essence of struggle. Which further creeps doubts in his mind. Finally he ends up going to jail, for her and for the country.The narration is simplistic, profound, dramatic as usual R.K.Narayan novels are .
